What is the UK Driving Theory Test?

Everything you need to know about the DVSA theory test before you start preparing

The Two Parts of the Theory Test

The UK driving theory test is set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and consists of two parts that you must pass in a single sitting. The multiple-choice section tests your knowledge of the Highway Code, road signs, and safe driving practices with 50 questions in 57 minutes. The hazard perception section tests your ability to spot developing hazards in 14 video clips of real driving scenarios.

Multiple Choice

  • 50 questions in 57 minutes
  • Pass mark: 43 out of 50 (86%)
  • Covers 14 categories from the Highway Code

Hazard Perception

  • 14 video clips of driving scenarios
  • Pass mark: 44 out of 75
  • Score based on how quickly you spot hazards

How to Prepare Effectively

The most effective way to prepare for your theory test is to combine regular practice with study of the Highway Code. We recommend dedicating at least 20 hours to preparation, spread over 2-4 weeks. Start with our Highway Code study materials to build your knowledge, then test yourself with our practice questions and full mock tests.

Don't forget to practice hazard perception clips regularly — many learners focus only on the multiple-choice section and are caught off guard by the hazard perception test. Our platform includes interactive hazard perception training videos to help you develop the skills you need.

How long does it take to prepare for the theory test?

Most learners need between 2-4 weeks of regular study. Our app will help you create a personalized study schedule based on your test date and current knowledge level. We recommend studying for at least 20 hours in total, spread across multiple sessions for the best retention.

Are your questions the same as in the real test?

Yes, we use DVSA licensed questions that match the format and style of the actual theory test. This ensures you're practicing with the most relevant material. Our question bank covers all 14 categories tested in the official DVSA theory test.

What is the theory test pass mark?

The UK driving theory test consists of two parts. For the multiple-choice section, you need to answer at least 43 out of 50 questions correctly (86%). For the hazard perception section, you need to score at least 44 out of 75. You must pass both parts in the same sitting.

How many questions are on the theory test?

The multiple-choice part of the UK theory test contains 50 questions that you must answer within 57 minutes. Questions are drawn from a bank of over 700 official DVSA questions covering topics like road signs, safety margins, vehicle handling, and the Highway Code.

How many mock tests do I need to take?

We recommend taking at least 5 full mock tests before your real exam. Most successful students take between 7-10 mock tests to build confidence and reduce test anxiety. Our mock tests simulate the exact conditions of the real test with 50 questions and a 57-minute time limit.

What is the hazard perception test?

The hazard perception test is the second part of your theory test. You watch 14 video clips of real driving scenarios and must click when you spot a developing hazard. Each clip contains one scoreable hazard, except one clip which has two. You score points based on how quickly you identify each hazard, with a maximum of 5 points per hazard.
