Why arm signals still matter

Direction indicators and brake lights do most of the signalling on a modern car, but arm signals still appear in the Highway Code and in theory test questions. They are useful when your indicators might not be seen — for example in bright sunlight — or to reinforce your intention, such as when slowing down to stop at a zebra crossing.

You also need to recognise the arm signals given by others. Cyclists and horse riders rely on them entirely, so understanding what an outstretched arm or an up-and-down wave means helps you anticipate what the rider will do next and give them the room they need.

Theory test tip

Arm signals should confirm what your indicators are already showing — never give a signal that could confuse other road users, and always cancel your indicator once the manoeuvre is complete.
