Theory Test Guide
How the car theory test works
The DVSA car theory test asks 50 multiple-choice questions and gives you 57 minutes to answer them. The pass mark is 43 out of 50, which leaves very little room for guesswork — steady, topic-by-topic revision is the most reliable way to reach it. Some questions are presented as a short case study, where several questions relate to the same driving scenario.
Using this practice bank
The 746 questions here are organised into the same 14 topics the DVSA draws from, covering everything from alertness and attitude through to motorway rules and road and traffic signs. Work through one topic at a time, read the explanation after every answer, and return to anything you got wrong until it sticks. Your progress is saved per question, so you can always see which areas still need attention.
Once your topic scores are consistently strong, sit the full 50-question mock test under exam timing to check you can hold your accuracy across a whole paper. Bear in mind the real test also includes a separate hazard perception section of 14 video clips with a pass mark of 44 out of 75, so practise both parts before booking.
