Recognising vehicle markings
The markings on the rear of large vehicles are there to make them conspicuous and to warn you about how they behave. Red and yellow striped markings identify heavy goods vehicles and builders' skips, projection markers highlight loads that overhang the front or rear of a vehicle, and the school bus sign warns you that children may be boarding or crossing nearby.
Tankers and other vehicles carrying dangerous goods display hazard warning plates that identify the substance on board — vital information for the emergency services after an incident. Treat any marked vehicle with extra caution: leave more room, expect it to move slowly or make wide turns, and never cut in sharply after overtaking a long vehicle.
