How the ADI Part 1 test works
The ADI Part 1 exam is the first of three tests on the way to becoming an approved driving instructor. The multiple-choice part asks 100 questions in 90 minutes, split into four bands of 25. To pass you need at least 85 overall and a minimum of 20 in every band — a strong band cannot make up for a weak one, so balanced revision matters more here than in any other theory test.
Revising band by band
The four question groups on this page mirror the exam bands: road procedure; traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge; driving test, disabilities and law; and publications and instructional techniques. Between them they hold 792 practice questions with full explanations.
Track your score in each band separately and keep practising your weakest one until it clears the 80 per cent line comfortably. The hazard perception part of Part 1 is also tougher than the learner version, with a pass mark of 57 out of 75.
